Material selection guide

201 vs 304 vs 316 stainless steel: start with the actual conditions.

Grade selection should be based on the environment, fabrication route, appearance, cleaning/maintenance expectation and relevant standard—not on a grade name alone.

201 stainless steel

For applications where conditions are clearly defined.

201 is commonly considered when commercial requirements and the intended environment permit it. Confirm corrosion exposure, forming/welding needs, finish requirement and the applicable material standard before selection.

304 stainless steel

A widely specified general-purpose grade.

304 is often considered for many architectural, commercial and fabricated applications. It still requires review of the actual environment, surface treatment, fabrication process and cleaning regime.

316 stainless steel

Consider where the service environment is more demanding.

316 may be discussed for applications that need a different corrosion-resistance profile. The location, exposure, design details and maintenance plan should be considered together before confirming a grade.

Do not select by price alone

A lower initial material cost can be outweighed by unsuitable performance, rework or replacement. Confirm the application, local environment and acceptance standard before the quotation is finalized.

Questions to include in your enquiry

Where will it be used?

Indoor/outdoor location, cleaning agents, humidity, coastal or industrial exposure, and contact with other materials all matter.

How will it be processed?

State cutting, forming, welding, polishing or PVD requirements, as these affect the recommended material and delivery condition.

What is the required finish?

Specify natural, mirror, Hairline, patterned or coated surface and provide a sample/reference if appearance is critical.

Which standard applies?

Provide the required grade, standard, document and inspection requirement before the order is confirmed.

Need to compare materials for a specific project?

Send your application, environment, dimensions, surface and quantity. We will identify the information that needs confirmation before a material recommendation or quotation.
